From Black Coal to Beautiful Greenery

Walking from Donisthorpe along the former railway line to Oakthorpe, this route will pass ‘Thought It’ pit head and onto the old Ashby Canal basin to Hicks Lodge. Taking the new pathway through Newfields Colliery woods, it will then follow the old Calke to Moira tramway. At Moira Furnace we will follow the restored Ashby Canal back to the start, seeing how these once black coalfields are now thriving green spaces.

This walk is led by Ian Malcolm and is part of the National Forest Walking Festival. The walk will cover approx 5 miles, including 6 stiles and starts from Donisthorpe Woodland Centre (DM’s).

Please book your free place by contacting blacktogreen@nationalforest.org or 01283 551211.
